tuscola competition: february 4, 2017
The AHS Winter Guard ended their season at the Tuscola Competition on Saturday, February 4th. They placed 1st with both group routines and gave a wonderful finale performance of "New York, New York".

The AHS Winter Guard attended its second competition of the season. They entered both of their group routines, as well as Kayli's solo. Both group routines placed 1st and Kayli placed 3rd with her solo.
basketball games: january 20 and 31
The Winter Guard performed at two more basketball games in January. The first saw an encore of "Over the Rainbow". The second was a busy night: Kayli performed her solo at the JV game and the whole squad debuted their "New York, New York" routine for their home crowd.
charleston competition: january 7, 2017
The AHS Winter Guard entered the regional IDTA competition at Charleston High School on Saturday, January 7th. They earned 1st place with their lyrical "Wizard of Oz" routine. Kayli placed 3rd with her solo and also received a Rising Star award. Great job, girls!

The AHS Winter Guard has already had a busy start to their season! Captain, Kayli Barnes, competed at her first solo contest in October. The guard's first performance was the 4th AES Flag Camp show on December 1st. They performed with 40 elementary students to "All I Want for Christmas is You". The guard debuted their lyrical routine to "Over the Rainbow" on December 16th. We are excited to see how the rest of the season will go!

The AHS Color Guard performed at five home football games and three competitions during the 2016 marching season. They also marched in the Arcola Broom Corn and Homecoming Parades. They placed 3rd at the Monticello Sage City Invitational; 4th at the EIU Panther Marching Band Festival; and 3rd in field show and 1st in parade at the Oblong Spooktacular. It was another fun season!

The AHS Color Guard has been busy this summer! They practiced once a week, had two days of Flag Camp, and a week of Band Camp. In addition, two of our members attended the Smith Walbridge Flag and Rifle Clinic at EIU and were awarded medals for their hard work and progress during the camp. We are looking forward to what the rest of the season will bring!

The Arcola High School Winter Guard's first performance was their Kiddie Camp show on Thursday, December 10th. 37 elementary students joined the high school squad to perform a Disney show. Their songs included: A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes, A Whole New World, and Can You Feel the Love Tonight? The students practiced two days after school to get ready for their performance.

Congratulations to the undefeated Purple Riders football team on their 1A State Championship over Stark County! The Color Guard had a blast supporting the team all season, especially at State at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb.

On a cold and snowy November afternoon, the Arcola Color Guard was among several fans out to support the Purple Riders as they hoped to make it to their first state championship game in 20 years. After a slippery start, the Riders took control and never looked back, resulting in a 42-0 shutout victory over LeRoy to earn a spot at State! We'll see you in DeKalb!

Tryouts for the 2015-2016 Winter Guard squad will be held the week of November 9th. November 9, 10, and 12 will be clinics to learn the routine. Each clinic day will be from 3:15-4:30pm. Auditions will be on Friday, November 13th beginning at 3:15pm.

The Arcola Color Guard attended Marching Band Camp with the high school band from August 3rd-August 7th. The girls learned two more routines for their halftime show, learned marching fundamentals, and learned how to make formations on the field by reading drill charts. The girls had great attitudes and worked very hard all week. They put on a performance for their friends and family at the end of camp to showcase their work and each girl came away with an award for the week. We are looking forward to our first football game, as well as the rest of the season!

The Arcola Color Guard had their Flag Camp from Monday, July 27-Thursday, July 30 at the school. Despite the heat, the girls worked very hard and got a lot accomplished. They learned a routine to perform to the drumline cadence, worked on their parade song routine, and learned the routine to the first song of their halftime show. With the help of alumni, Miriam Vazquez, Cecilia Ibarra, and Bailey Rogers, the girls also practiced marching technique, learned several tosses, and worked with both rifle and saber.

The Smith Walbridge Flag and Rifle Clinic was held July 7-10 at EIU. Guard captain, Kayli Barnes, and senior guard member, Sarah Patridge, attended this year. Kayli participated in the advanced flag class and Sarah participated in the advanced rifle class. Despite a very rainy week, the girls learned a lot and got the chance to work with world-class instructors. They ended the week with a performance inside the Lantz Arena to showcase what they learned.
raggedy ann 100th birthday celebration
2015 marks the 100th anniversary of Raggedy Ann, a popular doll, which originated in Arcola. The Color Guard was invited to march in the Raggedy Parade and to perform standstill routines downtown and at the fire station on Saturday, June 13. The girls worked hard in preparation for this performance and did a fantastic job!

Thanks to the Purple Riders Football Team, our marching season got a two-week extension! We closed out our marching season with an encore of the Cheer/Flag performance at halftime of the football game. It was fun reuniting with the cheerleaders and performing our routine on the field. After a week off from spinning, the guard participated in Band Camp from July 28-August 1. We began the week learning marching fundamentals and with a kick-off potluck Monday evening. During the rest of the week, we learned the formations to two songs. By the end of the week, we were able to march and spin to those songs. The week ended with a performance for the students' friends and families. Although it had to be held inside because of weather, it was a great first performance. This week was definitely a sign of good things to come this season from the Arcola Color Guard!

Flag Camp took place at the school from Monday, July 14-Thursday, July 17. During the week, we had several guests come work with us on marching, tosses, and weapons. We spent a lot of time learning the halftime routine. This was the most productive flag camp we have had. The girls worked very hard and had a lot of fun, too. We had dress-up spirit days and ended the week with a James Bond scavenger hunt.

Our captain, Miriam Vazquez, and junior member, Sarah Patridge, attended the Smith Walbridge Flag and Rifle Clinic from July 8-11 at Eastern Illinois University. While there, Miriam's focus was rifle and Sarah's focus was flag. They got to meet members of other guards around the country and ended their time with a performance for friends and family. Great job representing Arcola, girls!

The first Arcola Elementary Winter Guard performance was a huge success! 29 elementary students (grades 1-6) performed with the high school guard at halftime of the boys' basketball game on Friday, February 21st. The girls performed a Disney show, including the songs, "Part of Your World", "Beauty and the Beast", and "Let it Go". All of the girls involved did a wonderful job. We are already looking forward to our next performance next year!

This season, the Winter Guard will perform at five home basketball games. They will perform their show "Mermaid" by Train at four of the games. Those performance dates are: January 14, January 24, February 3, and February 18. For the fifth game, they will be joined by 29 elementary students for the first ever Arcola Elementary Winter Guard performance! The guard and the elementary guard will perform to a Disney medley. That performance will take place on February 7. The squad consists of seven members in junior high and high school. We are looking forward to an exciting month of performances!

Arcola High School's Band Camp was held from July 29-August 2. The guard learned basic marching skills and the routines they will perform for this year's halftime show, Queen. We could not have asked for better weather or better attitudes from the girls. They worked hard and helped each other out. We also celebrated the week with spirit days, including Pajama Day, Pink Day, and Purple and White Day. Band Camp ended with a performance for family and friends on the football field. It was a very successful week and we are looking forward to what the rest of the season has to bring!
SMITH Walbridge flag & rifle clinic
Our Color Guard captain, Miriam Vazquez, attended the Smith Walbridge Flag & Rifle Clinic from July 9-12. She learned many skills to use both on and off the field to help the performance level of the entire squad. The camp concluded with a performance at O'Brien Stadium on EIU's campus.

Color Guard is a physical activity that requires commitment, skill, and practice.

Winter guard 2013
The 2013 Winter Guard season has officially begun! Winter Guard is an opportunity for students to be involved in a creative, athletic, and entertaining activity. Winter Guard combines dance with flags, rifles, and sabers to put on an exciting halftime show at one girls' and four boys' basketball games. During football season, the job of the Color Guard is to add beauty, grace, and artistry to the marching band's field show. During basketball season, the Winter Guard has the opportunity to showcase all of those qualities and more by being featured on their own. This season, we are proud to present a squad of 10 members performing to the music of James Bond.

Color Guard 2012 Recap
It was a great season for the 2012 Arcola Color Guard! In addition to performing at home football games and in the Broom Corn Parade, the squad competed in three marching competitions with the band. The girls placed first in field show at the Sage City Invitational in Monticello. They also placed second in field show and first in parade at the Oblong Spooktacular. This year's squad members were: Janie Cantu (senior), Miriam Vazquez (sophomore), Dana de la Garza (freshman), and Bridgett McWhorter (senior). Congratulations to these ladies on a terrific season!
