Practice! Practice!
Elementary students should be practicing four times a week for at least 15 minutes to prepare for solo and ensemble contest on March 16th at Arcola. Weekly practice schedules are due every week and need to be turned in on time (at the next lesson). These practice schedules need to be filled out by the student and signed by a grown-up or older sibling every week to maintain an A in band.
5th grade band debut
The 5th grade band made their concert debut, on Sunday, December 9th during the Christmas concert.
GREAT job 5th graders! Keep up the good work!

Practice Practice practice
Every week I send home a weekly practice sheet with your student. Please make sure that they are properly filling out the sheet and that they have you initial the sheet after practicing. This practice sheet is worth half of their weekly grade. Every week, a student can receive 10 points for showing up to their lesson with their instrument and book, and 10 points for turning in a practice schedule. It is important that the amount of time spent practicing be distributed throughout the week among several practice sessions. Here are some helpful tips to help your child succeed:

Additional Practice Thoughts
Practice Guidelines
- Try to establish a routine: Same place, same time, free from distractions.
- A music stand is helpful to promote good posture and playing position.
- Practice regularly.
- Two or three short practice sessions are better than one long session.
- Try to practice at least 15 - 20 minutes per day, three days per week.
- Practice each part/section slowly at first; then increase speed.
- Play through the piece/section as much as possible to begin; Work out the difficult measures; then play through the piece/section again.
- Practice regularly with the CD.
- Play for your parents and friends.
- Record your practice times and turn in your practice chart each week.
Additional Practice Thoughts
- Practice only on days that end in “y”.
- Practice only on days you eat.
- Practice so you can stand by yourself!
